William Henry Chafe Oral History Collection, 1933-1988 and undated.

Collection includes transcripts, mostly typed, of 71 interviews conducted by Chafe in preparation for his book CIVILITIES AND CIVIL RIGHTS, which dealt with the civil rights movement in Greensboro, N.C. during the 1950s and 1960s. Includes 28 cassette tapes. Collection also includes notes and research for several chapters of Chafe's book, as well as clippings and other assorted documents from topics such as the Vietnam War and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. Materials include information on civil rights activities throughout Durham and Chapel Hill. There is also a small amount of photographs of protests. Addition (03-158) (24 items, .6 lin. ft.; dated 1963-1977) contains additional audiocassettes for the collection. Some tapes may duplicate material already in the collection. This accession is not described in the finding aid.
